A Day at the Zoo

On Monday Iris and I were able to go on a field trip to the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium courtesy of CVA! The field trip was originally scheduled for a date that ended up being during our big snowstorm a little while back, but we got extremely lucky with the weather on Monday. It was sunny and mild outside, a perfect day to walk around and learn about animals.

Iris was in charge of the map and where we went, so the first place she led us was the penguins! Did you know that penguins and polar bears live on opposite sides of the equator? I didn't until I learned it at the zoo!

Iris wrote down one fact about most of the animals she saw. Here she is learning that Sumatran Tigers eat the kind of animal that lives in the enclosure right behind her!

Here, kitty, kitty!

This is an Asian Porcupine. They are huge! And so cool looking. I had never seen a porcupine before, so this was probably my favorite animal of the day.

The Siamangs. They put on a  fun show for the crowd gathered around.

Iris with the Asian Elephants. If you look closely, you will notice the elephant started to pee just as I snapped the photo. Tee hee.

Iris took this photo of the sharks in the giant tank.

The Arctic Foxes were "cuuuuuuuuuuuute!"

Where to next?

A Sea Otter grooming.

I snapped this photo as we headed out to our car to get lunch. See? Absolutely gorgeous day!

Iris loved feeding the goats. Almost as much as the goats liked being fed, I think!

One other highlight of the trip that I didn't get photos of was getting to her the zookeepers give a talk at the North Pacific tank in the aquarium. We learned all kinds of interesting facts about the animals that inhabit the water all around us, like Spiny Dogfish, which is a kind of shark, and Sunflower Starfish. They were feeding the Spiny Dogfish anchovies right out of their hands.

We had a blast, but agreed that we missed Eloise and wished she had come along. I thought about pulling Eloise out of school to bring her but wanted it to be a special trip just for Iris. Oh, well. Next time we'll bring her!
